Hours of Operation

Feel Good. Save a Life. Be The Match.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood disease like leukemia, lymphoma, or sickle cell.  For some of them, the only hope of a cure is a blood stem cell or marrow transplant from a matching volunteer donor.

A sibling with the same parents is the most likely person in the family to match.  Only 30% of patients who need a transplant have a matching donor in their family.  Therefore 70% depend on Be The Match®, operated by the Nation Marrow Donor Program®, to find a matching donor.

Who Needs a Blood Transplant?

People battling leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell and other blood diseases may need a transplant.  Their only hope for a cure is to find someone with the same tissue type who is willing to donate to them.  Unfortunately, some patients pass away before they find a match due to a lack of committed volunteers on the Registry.

What Can I Do To Help?

It’s easy as 1-2-3

Simply register online to be a committed, life saving donor.  Follow these three simple steps:

  1. Sign Up - scan QR code, text CURE110 to 61474, or go to join.bethematch.org/obi
  2. Swab – receive and return cheek swab kit
  3. Stay Committed – be ready to donate if called as a match.

What Happens if I’m a Match?

You may or may not ever match to a patient.  However, if you’re a suitable match for a person who needs a transplant, you will be contacted.  Depending on what’s ultimately best for the patient, you will donate either blood stem cells or marrow.

Most often, doctors request a stem cells donation (a process like donating platelets or plasma).  The donor will receive blood stimulating medications days prior to the donating.  This donation will take place at Oklahoma Blood Institute in Oklahoma City (travel expenses can be reimbursed).

Occasionally, a marrow donation is requested.  Anesthesia is used while liquid marrow is withdrawn from the hip area.  The donor may or may not experience some short-term discomfort afterwards.  This donation will take place in Oklahoma City.

How Do I Encourage Others to Join?
