Jackson FamilyKenya Jackson was born May 1, 2001, with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder of the red blood cells whereby some of the blood cells are abnormally shaped.Sickle cells block the flow of blood through the blood vessels which results in pain episodes. The cells also cause damage to some of the body’s vital organs such as the liver and kidneys. When Kenya was two years old, her spleen had to be removed. She was in intensive care for seventeen days. Now, Kenya is at risk for certain bacterial infections as well as pneumonia. She must rely on blood transfusions to help treat certain complications each time there is an episode. During Kenya’s short lifetime, she has already had 26 transfusions of red blood cells. With each transfusion, we watch Kenya bounce back to life. We are so thankful for the power of prayer, Coffee Memorial Blood Center, excellent medical care, and all blood donors who take time out of their schedules to give the gift of life. Kenya says, “all blood donors are my heroes.” Thank you for what you do!
