On any given day, most of us interact directly with blood donors. What an incredible experience it is to visit with people who are taking time out of their very busy schedules to help save the lives of people they may never meet! Blood donors help to make our jobs rewarding and, at times, very entertaining. Working at the blood center also presents challenges. The environment is heavily regulated under FDA standards, and as with many healthcare industry jobs, we must implement change on a fairly frequent basis. The need for accuracy is paramount, and our jobs come with a high level of responsibility that must be recognized and accepted. None of us are superhuman, so we don't expect unrealistic levels of perfection from our employees. However, we do expect a high degree of accuracy and complete honesty, and we maintain numerous quality control steps to ensure that safe blood products are provided to the patients we serve. To counterbalance the stress that can result in such a highly regulated environment, we do our best to promote a supportive and good-humored atmosphere. We host fun events like our Employee Appreciation Week held in conjunction with National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, monthly birthday celebrations, secret pals, picnics and parties. We sponsor United Way Week with burgers and fun activities, and we participate in a number of charitable efforts in support of our community. We also recognize outstanding employees through our Employee of the Month and Employee of the Year program. The staff at CMBC share a vision of what the blood center should be and the principles that should guide our actions. Our Vision We aspire to maintain a plentiful supply of safe blood for our community with enough reserves to help other blood centers in need. We envision a company where every employee values the selfless acts of our donors and is provided the same care, respect and tolerance within the organization that they are expected to share externally with our customers. We wish to maintain a diverse staff who take their jobs seriously yet know how to respectfully have fun with each other and with the community we serve. By sharing our knowledge and learning from each other, we will act as a cohesive team solving problems in admirable ways. We will be fiscally responsible and operationally stable, and we will adhere to our principles. Our Guiding Principles:
- We dedicate ourselves daily to the importance of saving lives. We must anticipate and respond to the community’s needs for safe blood products and related services. In meeting these needs we must instill quality in everything we do.
- We acknowledge that our employees are our most vital assets and that they rightfully have a personal mission to care for themselves and their families. We must maintain a work environment that emphasizes the value of our employees and their contributions to our mission. We must provide competent management, and their actions must be just and ethical.
- We will develop an attitude of teamwork in our day-to-day operations. We must build trust within the organization, including our employees and volunteers, as well as throughout the community we serve. We will be committed to equal and ethical treatment of all employees and to open communications both internally and externally whenever possible.
- We must promote continuous quality improvement as a necessary process. We must be willing to embrace difficult changes while maintaining enough stability to ensure consistent operations. We will seek continuous development of our professional and behavioral competencies.
- We must be responsible to the community we serve. We must strive to be a leader in the blood banking industry through our training, technology, equipment and methods used while being ever conscious of the need to control our costs in an effort to maintain the lowest possible prices for the blood products and services we provide. We must create reserves to provide for adverse times while never losing sight of our non-profit mission.
